Ash Glazes
I love experimenting with glazes crafted from various types of ash, often blending them with clay or pumice to create something uniquely raw. These simple glazes truly come to life in atmospheric firings, like those at the Hautere kiln in Te Horo. During firing, salt and soda vapors are introduced into the kiln, encouraging the ash glaze to flow in delicate, webbed patterns that cascade down the walls of each pot in mesmerizing ways.
The interaction of salt, soda, and ash creates intricate effects — a dance of fire, earth, and air captured forever in clay. Each piece feels like a small fragment of the land transformed, embracing both ruggedness and elegance.
The rough textures, natural hues, and spontaneous patterns bridge traditional methods with a contemporary vision. There’s something grounding in creating pieces that honor their origins, and I hope each one offers a connection to the land, a touch of nature, and a reminder of the inherent beauty found in imperfection.
